The housing market showed further signs of levelling out last month, with prices easing in some cities, and the number of sales still lagging behind last year.

The time it takes to sell a property in Auckland is now at a six-year high, as house sales in the city continue to ease. According to the Real Estate Institute, the median house price in Auckland fell a seasonally adjusted 1.7 per cent last month to $800,000, although it was 11 per cent higher year-on-year.

The number of Auckland residential properties for sale has risen, prices dropped last month and places took longer to sell, according to the latest Real Estate Institute data out this morning.

"After months of record low numbers of houses available for sale across Auckland, the number of properties for sale in the region jumped by 1135 (17 per cent) compared to January 2016," REINZ said.

New Zealand's national median house sale price dropped $4000 last month and Auckland prices are not rising as fast as they were.

Real Estate Institute data showed the national median was $516,000, down on the record $520,000 high in November.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) today announced the appointment of Bindi Norwell as its new Chief Executive.

In making the announcement Chairman Dame Rosanne Meo commented that Bindi brings a strong commercial perspective to the organisation. “Bindi is an experienced business leader and strategist who has worked in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. She has a strong background in digital media and technology and most recently, Executive Director of TNS Global, a customer and marketing insights-based consultancy working with a diverse network of New Zealand Companies.”
